Lamarck Col As An Overnight From Upper Lamarck Lake
. We were on the trail a little after 7am. We had over 1,800’ of ascent over the 3.75 miles to Upper Lamarck Lake. Ben wanted to go all the way to Lamarck Col after we set up camp on the other side of the creek. There are some nice camp sites near the beginning of the Col portion of the hike.
I’ll be age 78 this month and there was no way I was ready to continue.
The weather held and we had a great start and hiked with day packs (and cameras) the 3 miles to Lamarck Col. My Garmin Fenix had us at 6 miles round trip from our campsite with 2,468’ of ascent. It was about 7 hours round trip. This was not a “smooth” trail and not falling was a priority.
I would say that the view from the crest (My son found the sign to Kings Canyon but he was way ahead of me) was as splendid as all of the videos I have seen. It is probably the single biggest collection of mountains I have ever seen. There were lots of “evolution” type names. It is in the top 5 of my Sierra Views and every bit worth the suffering I endured.

Dinkey Lakes Day Hike to Mystery And Swede Lakes. The trailhead is 12 miles off Dinkey Lake Road on a road that requires off road tires and high ground clearance. The trailhead to Cliff Lake can be reached by turning left by the boat ramp and driving along the lake to the end of the road. There is a private residence at the very end and the parking area is to the left of that. There is a sign for the beginning of the trail. This hike is essentially 11 miles round trip with an elevation gain overall of about 2,000 feet. The maximum elevation is near 9,500...

My son Ben and I set out from Fresno at 6am, which got us to the trailhead at 8am. Our hike took about 4.5 hours round trip with about 2,000’ of gain and a distance of about 5.6 miles total. We began the hike as usual on the 33-mile Dusy Ershim OHV trail. This trail travels to Courtright reservoir and is only for the most rugged vehicles. In more recent years I have discovered a cut-off trail w...

George Lake is another mile beyond Upper Twin Lake and another climb of about 1,000’. So, in round numbers George Lake is 10 miles round trip and 2,000 of gain from the trailhead at Badger Flat on the Kaiser Pass Road. I was out for 7 hours total. I got an early start at 5:30am and beat the two road construction crews that had flagmen and pilot cars. The morning was cooler (it was actually 31de...

This is an 8.4 round trip hike (2,000' elevation gain) to Nellie Lake in the Kaiser Wilderness of the Sierra National Forest. The trail was closed for quite some time b/c of the Creek Fire and its aftermath. There is about 2 miles of burned forest for the first 2 miles outbound. The trail can be a bit hard to follow through this section. Take insect repellent. Hike early in the day if possible....

This video is a bit of a mystery. The adults began with two chicks and one disappeared. It looks like the one chick was killed and eaten based on the pile of feathers in the nest. there was an Osprey that flew over the nest a number of times when I was there. One of the adults chased away 6 buzzards once also. These are probably the most photographed resident eagles at Millerton Lake. They had ...

White Bark Vista is about 2 hours NE of Fresno CA and a mile SE of Kaiser Pass. The "road" while snow free was so terrible I decided to walk in. It is about 275' gain outbound and the view elevation is about 9,500'. I have a high clearance 4X4 but it was not worth the risk. It was not an optimal day for my annual trip with hazy skies, no clouds and little snow left in the mountains. I was by my...

There are no photos or video of the fledge flying. The young bird fledged sometime between Thursday and this morning (Saturday). I posted earlier videos of this bird when much younger.

This is a video of a single Bald Eagle offspring that fledged from the nest this week. The eagle's parents are a young couple that both have black steaks in their white heads. Sycamore Island is formed by the San Joaquin River as it flows through Madera County CA U.S.A. The nest is located in a Sycamore Tree.
Kings River Bald Eagles Feeding

These three bald eagle offspring have kept their parents very busy providing food and protection. They are located along the Kings River in Fresno County CA. USA. This is the second year for this nest site. I would estimate that at least one of these offspring will fledge within the next two weeks. The nest is about 100 meters from a paved road.

    • @MidsierramusingBlogspot

      It is more likely the hawk chick was brought into the nest for food and the adults decided to feed it instead. I never saw a third egg before I saw the third chick and I could see down into the nest from my view spot above.

    Is part of the trail on a stock trail --- that is, overly dusty?

    • @MidsierramusingBlogspot
      @MidsierramusingBlogspot 5 років тому

      Stock do use the trail. The dusty part is more a function of lack of rain in late summer. Late spring and early summer are less dusty but one has to consider crossing Evolution Creek in late spring with the much higher water and especially this year (2019). My sons and I crossed it in late June one year after an above snow year and we were mid chest in water that was fast and cold. It can be crossed further upstream from the trail with less difficulty. The ranger from McClure may have a sign out about that if the water is high where the trail crosses the river. Late summer the creek is usually knee deep in a normal year. This video is mid August so the trail is dustier.

    That’s a lot of white water. I spent time at the Kern in 2017 and the water was high and ice cold in late August. I imagine 2019 will see the same heavy flows all over the Sierras. Nice digitized image in the kayak. That’s an adventure most will never experience.

    Jaime Ray Jaime Ray 6 years ago Thank you Mr. Matson for posting the interview with Rev. Morton Kelsey. I have read many of his books beginning with The Other Side of Silence back in the early 80's. His insightful work and the counseling I received from both he and Jeanne Thomas have stayed with me for all these years. His was an example to follow! His work gave me the tools I needed to get through the many challenges year after year. He is a very dear soul. Examples, guidance and disciplines found in his writings have had a positive and lasting impact on me. Watching these recordings, listening to him speak again brings back many fond memories. dematson dematson 4 days ago Hi Jaime, Morton was a brilliant man, a spiritual man and a gentle soul. nice video with good shots of the trail signs. I'm planning this trip in the summer, was going to do 4 nights with a down day at Rae lakes so we can check out 60 lake basin. I was curious how long from Rae lakes to 60 lake basin? Wondering if we would have time to get back there on day 2 to camp there rather than Rae lakes? We would be starting from Charlotte lake on day 2 heading towards rae lakes. Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Do you recommend 60 lake over Rae lakes?

    • @MidsierramusingBlogspot
      @MidsierramusingBlogspot 6 років тому

      Hi Bill, That is a pretty good climb out of Charlotte Lake and then over Glen Pass and down to Rae Lakes. There is a trailhead sign for 60 lake basin as soon as you get to Rae Lakes on your left. You could decide to camp near there or continue on to 60 Lake Basin which is another climb over a ridge and back down to about the same elevation. There are fewer people in 60 Lake Basin b/c it is away from the JMT. Hope I understood your question.

    Thanks for sharing this. I am contemplating this route. Curious how late in the season you went? It would be good to know that stream at the camp area is running strong in mid-August to lessen the water load going up. I have done self-navigation at Upper Crabtree Pass to Whitney Pass, as well as Boundary Peak. Those were both pretty stressful. Sounds like this is that level of effort so I don't know why I'm contemplating it again. : )
